Travelling changes your life: Namibia

Where do I begin!! I initially thought that I’d be able to blog while on holiday – but alas! – LOL; there was just no time; and the time that I did have, I spent relaxing.

To my friend Candice for inviting me on this trip with her – THANKYOU! I didn’t hesitate at all when she raised the idea; I was looking forward to visiting a place – a neighbouring country that I’ve never seen. And just as you might have it in your mind when you think of Namibia… be assured; it’s exactly like that!

Sand, sand…and more…sand. But beauty is reflected in the nothingness…the dunes, though all the same, they are not. It just so speaks of the magnitude of God; and how He has placed even each grain of sand in its place.

Every day was a great adventure. Thanks to Lana and Don for their amazing hospitality too -  I’ll definitely come knock on your door again!

We boarded the flight on Friday, 01 July 2016  - and the entire morning while packing it was raining like it only can in Cape Town. I knew this plane to Namibia was going to be a tiny one… so I was just hoping that the rain would end by the time we depart! Candice and I were in loud giggles and took our time – checked in our luggage, had lunch and eventually strolled to the boarding gate…and it was quite far down. We get onto the escalator and from where we were called to the staff to say we are on our way – and they said we are the only ones they are waiting for..! WE RAN! Lol – got into the bus, and to the plan we went: and then we burst out laughing! This plane was small! The only crew on the flight was the pilate and the 1 flight attendant – who serviced all the passengers! Keep in mind – we were about  only 30 on the flight.

“Ons kon ons lag nie hou nie”  J

The flight was safely about 2hrs long – but then I had the most frightening experience of my life.  Earlier in the week while at work, I suffered from really bad sinusitis and a cold: self-medicated and was feeling ok when it was time to leave. I knew I had to be ‘better’ for this trip!

When the pilate announced that it was 10minutes to descent; my ears blocked. This was normal – but it worsened. To a point where I had my head in my hands and my tears were just rolling. A stabbing pain from both ears hit me, and it literally felt like my brain was being squashed: I cried! It was just so painfull! And 10 minutes…seemed like forever! Candice tried her best to calm me and soothe me as best as she could.. (hugs to you, my friend!) – she even started massaging my sinuses.

Needless to say, the pain all only subsided later the evening.

We landed at Walvis Bay Airport. Yes – in the middle of flippin no where!

But even that – was beautiful!

The airport is currently undergoing renovations, so a ‘make-shift/temporary structure’ is assigned as the ‘go to’ place. No wifi. Just this place.
Lana and Don came to collect us about 30minutes after landing…and we were happy to see them, as we had no cellphone reception to call anyone!

We spent Friday evening at the Izaaks residence; and the next morning packed up and headed further inland to Omarauru Game Lodge. Another few hours drive – so yes, by now; Candice and I were very tired of travelling.

We reached the lodge just after 13h00; unpacked in our chalet – and was scheduled for  a 2hour game drive from 14h00 till about 16h00.

That was brilliant… I made a new friend…seems elephants have a liking towards me..heehee.

We headed back to Walvis on Sunday; which left us to further explore both Walvis and Swakop the rest of the week. None of our days were rushed – which we preferred.

We know exactly what we wanted to do and spaced out our activities. From climbing Dune 7 (whoop whoop!!); to quad biking in the dunes , to camel riding – general sight seeing – it was just memorable!

It was also happiness all round to connect with another friend of ours in Swakopmund, Corachia – we had a great time together.

I have so much more to say about everyday…but in essence I think you can sense I enjoyed my stay in Namibia.

I appreciated that back home, we are privileged to be able to drink tap water...a small thing – over there, majority of people buy water.

 Would I go back?

Definitely!

I am glad to be home, although it was a bit of a getting use to again – no sand here! Heehee J
